Twitter to Form 'Content Moderation Council', Elon Musk Tweets

Elon Musk has tweeted that Twitter will instate a 'Content Moderation Council' comprised of people with 'widely diverse viewpoints'. One of the key functions of this council will be to consider unblocking the accounts of people who have been permanently suspended. No major decisions about content moderation or reinstating blocked accounts will be made without without that council, according to Musk's tweet. This suggests that the rumoured unblocking of controversial users, potentially including former US President Donald Trump, will not happen all of a sudden and might not happen at all. Musk has previously indicated that he considers account bans contrary to a commitment to free speech, and he envisions Twitter as a digital "public square".   Twitter will be forming a content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints. No major content decisions or account reinstatements will happen before that council convenes. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) Octobe

Qatar World Cup Organisers Hit Back At Australia Rights Criticism

Qatar's World Cup organisers on Thursday hit back at criticism of the Gulf state's rights record by the Australian football team, insisting that "no country is perfect". In response to the Australian call for better treatment of migrant workers and the LGBTQ community, a World Cup spokesperson said imposing "robust" labour laws had also been a "challenge" for Australia. "We have committed every effort to ensuring that this World Cup has had a transformative impact on improving lives," the organisers' Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy said. "Protecting the health, safety, security, and dignity of every worker contributing to this World Cup is our priority." Sixteen members of Australia's football men's team appeared in a short video on Thursday explaining their position. They acknowledged Qatar's attempts to improve conditions for migrant workers but said the changes had been "inconsistent".

Rishi Sunak Cheers Up UK's Tories, But Opposition Senses Weakness

Rishi Sunak said, "I told the truth for the good of the country." London: Britain on Wednesday saw the outlines of the next no-holds-barred general election campaign, after multimillionaire Rishi Sunak took office as the third prime minister of the year. Sunak gave as good as he got from the opposition Labour party at his first session of "Prime Minister's Questions" -- delighting his Conservative backbenchers after the turmoil of recent weeks. First Boris Johnson was forced out, after one scandal too many. Then the MPs voted for Sunak against Liz Truss as leader, only for the party's largely white, wealthy and southern English members to overrule them. "The only time he ran in a competitive election, he got trounced by the former prime minister, who herself got beaten by a lettuce," Labour leader Keir Starmer mocked Sunak in a febrile House of Commons. Truss suffered a political demise so rapid that a celebrity lettuce outlasted her in an

Delhi's Air Quality Turns 'Very Poor' As People Burst Crackers Despite Ban

Delhi's air quality turned "very poor" on Monday after the bursting of firecrackers on Diwali. New Delhi:  A large number of high-decibel firecrackers thundered throughout Diwali night on Monday as people in Delhi flouted the ban imposed on these by the city government. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai last week said bursting firecrackers in the national capital on Diwali will attract a jail term of up to six months and a fine of Rs 200. Despite the legal deterrent in place, people in many parts of the city, including in south and northwest Delhi, started bursting crackers by dusk. High-intensity firecrackers could be heard going off on the ground or mid-air. And, as the night progressed the intensity of firecrackers increased breaching permissible decibel limits, prompting some to wonder "if there was any ban at all". Bursting of firecrackers on Diwali is an age-old tradition, but authorities in Delhi said the decision to restrict it was taken afte

NATO Rejects Russia's "Dirty Bomb" Claims

Russia must not use it as a pretext for escalation, NATO said. Brussels: Russia must not escalate the conflict in Ukraine with false claims that Kyiv is planning to unleash a so-called "dirty bomb", the head of NATO warned Monday. Jens Stoltenberg weighed in following Moscow's repeated allegations that Ukraine could deploy such a weapon, sparking fears Russia could use one and blame Kyiv. The head of the US-led military alliance said he had spoken with Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin and Britain's Defence Secretary Ben Wallace "about Russia's false claim that Ukraine is preparing to use a dirty bomb on its own territory." "NATO Allies reject this allegation. Russia must not use it as a pretext for escalation. We remain steadfast in our support for Ukraine," he wrote on Twitter. Moscow has alleged that Ukraine is close to developing a dirty bomb, and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov insisted the threat is real. "This is not empty inform

Manhattan prosecutors have charged the Trump Organization, currently run by Trump's two adult sons, Donald Jr and Eric Trump, with hiding compensation it paid to top executives between 2005 and 2021. Trump, who is not named in the case, slammed the charges as a "witch hunt" by rivals, weeks ahead of congressional elections on November 8. "The highly partisan Democrat Witch Hunt goes on, this time in New York... right during the important Mid-Term Elections, of course," he said on social media. The company faces potential fines of over $1.5 million if found guilty. One of the implicated executives, longtime CFO Allen Weisselberg, has already pleaded guilty to 15 counts of tax fr

Apple Music, TV+ Prices Increased in Multiple Countries, but Not in India

Apple has increased the prices of some of its subscription services including the popular Apple Music and Apple TV+ around the world, including in the US and UK. However, users in India will not have to spend more than they are currently used to. According to Apple, the changes were necessary because of licensing price increases and the overall size of its content catalogues. An Apple statement has been reported by 9to5mac.com, and indicates that artistes and content creators can expect to earn more per stream as a result of this change. The company recently announced that Apple Music has amassed over 100 million tracks available to stream. In India, Apple Music will continue to cost Rs. 99 per month for individual users and Rs. 149 for a family with up to six members. The Student tier costs Rs. 59 per month if you can show valid identification, and the voice-only plan which only lets you stream tracks and curated radio stations with Siri voice commands, costs Rs. 49 per month. The outsourcing behemoth now worth around $75 billion helped drive India's transformation into the "back office of the world". One of only two non-Americans in Fortune magazine's 2012 list of the "12 greatest entrepreneurs of our time", the Infosys chief's life-changing moment came in 1974 when he was locked up for four nights in communist Eastern Europe. "That cured me from being a confused leftist to a determined compassionate capitalist," Narayana said afterwards. Sunak's mother-in-law Sudha meanwhile was Tata Motors' first female engineer after famously complaining via a postcard to the chairman abo
