Turkey Approves Finland's Bid To Join NATO

Finland and its neighbour Swede decided to join NATO last May amid Russia-Ukraine war. Ankara: Turkey on Thursday became the final NATO nation to ratify Finland's membership of the US-led defence alliance in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Lawmakers unanimously backed the Nordic country's accession two weeks after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan publicly blessed the bid. "This evening, we are keeping the promises we made to Finland," ruling party lawmaker Akif Cagatay Kilic said moments before the vote. Turkey's approval leaves Finland -- which has a 1,300-kilometre (800-mile) border with Russia -- with only a few technical steps before it becomes the 31st member of the world's most powerful military bloc. Officials expect the process to be completed as early as next week. Finland and its neighbour Sweden ended decades of military non-alignment and decided to join NATO last May. Their applications were accepted at a June alliance summit

Why Isn't PM Being Disqualified For Targeting Gandhis: Congress Leader

In the wake of Rahul Gandhi's disqualification from the Lok Sabha following his conviction in a defamation case, Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole on Sunday asked why Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not facing a similar action for constantly criticising Sonia Gandhi and late PM Rajiv Gandhi. Members of the Nagpur District Congress Committee and party workers led by Patole, former Union minister Vilas Muttemwar and other leaders staged a day-long 'Sankalp Satyagraha' protest at the Sanvidhan square to show their solidarity with Rahul Gandhi. Putin said he was open to talks on Ukraine and praised Beijing's 12-point position paper on the conflict, which includes a call for dialogue and respect for all countries' territorial sovereignty. He accused Kyiv of not being willing to implement China's proposals, which the United States has said would simply consolidate "Russian conquest" and allow the Kremlin to prepare a fresh offensive. "Many of the provisions of th

After Months Of Deadlock, Turkey's Erdogan Backs Finland's NATO Bid

Turkey's president Erdogan said he will back Finland's NATO bid after months of deadlock. Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ended months of diplomatically charged delays on Friday and asked parliament to quickly back Finland's bid to join NATO. A simultaneous decision by fellow holdout Hungary to schedule a Finnish ratification vote for March 27 means the US-led defence alliance will likely grow to 31 nations within a few months. NATO's expansion into a country with a 1,340-kilometre (830-mile) border with Russia will roughly double the length of the bloc's current frontier with its Cold War-era foe. But it also dashes the short-term hopes of fellow NATO aspirant Sweden -- a Nordic power whose litany of disputes with Turkey ultimately has sunk its bid to join the bloc before an alliance summit in July. Helsinki and Stockholm ended decades of military non-alignment and decided to join the world's most powerful defence alliance in the wake of

Last weekend marked three years since the UN health agency first described the situation as a pandemic -- though WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus insists countries should have jolted into action several weeks before. "I think we're coming to that point where we can look at Covid-19 in the same way we look at seasonal influenza," WHO emergencies director Michael Ryan told a press conference. "A threat to health, a virus that will continue to kill. But a virus that is not disrupting our society or disrupti

Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya said the ED and CBI are targeting Trinamool leaders. Kolkata: The West Bengal assembly passed a motion on Monday against the "misuse of central agencies" for targeting the Trinamool Congress. Referring to Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari's assertion that minister Partha Bhowmik will be put behind bars within a month, Mr Roy said the country, since 2014, has been witnessing rampant misuse of central agencies for harassing political leaders. Children and pregnant women have been urged to stay indoors. (Representational) Bangkok, Thailand: Nearly 200,000 people in Thailand have been admitted to hospital because of air pollution this week, officials have said, with Bangkok shrouded in a harmful haze. Australia all-rounder Cameron Green is seventh time lucky as he has converted a half-century into hundred and now feels more like a Test cricketer with "monkey off your back". Green, who is playing his 20th Test, scored 114 off 170 balls and his innings was no less significant than Usman Khawaja's 180 that took Australia to a solid first innings score of 480 on the second day of the fourth Test against India on Friday. "You feel more like a Test cricketer when you've got that monkey off your back, so it is nice to tick that off in a way. It's so special," Green told reporters at the end of the day's play. He got a few loose deliveries, especially from Umesh Yadav, which helped him quickly get into the 90s before completing his maiden ton. "I think I might have got a bit lucky, I got from 70, to 80, to 90 pretty quickly, so that probably helped a bit, not having too much time to think about it, that's all." With a top score of 84 in h
